as the bandage loosens

as the bandage loosens
i think of the time
i smelled you all the way home –
we first sat and talked our histories
and laughed smiles and felt the ease
on that eve which we had no clue we’d be together
and that white lace skirt still holds the door it caught in
and you still have mothballs in your closets
